14 in a row: ‘You knew the end was coming’ (AP)
It had to end sometime. How about 1992? The Atlanta Braves were coming off their worst-to-first season, surely a fluke if there ever was one. They were perennially one of baseball’s worst teams, the guys who passed for programming fodder on Ted Turner’s superstation between reruns of “The Andy Griffith Show,” popping up every now [...]

Phillies-Braves rained out (AP)
Most members of the Atlanta Braves probably weren’t even watching when their record streak of division titles ended Tuesday night. “We’ve known about it for some time,” third baseman Chipper Jones said. Atlanta’s scheduled game against the Philadelphia Phillies was postponed due to rain Tuesday night, sparing the Braves the chore of seeing the Mets-Marlins [...]

Cubs 8, Braves 3 (AP)
For much of the season, John Smoltz was the one who kept Atlanta from falling into a long losing streak. Now, with the Braves trying to make a desperate run for the wild card, their best pitcher can’t seem to win. Bothered by a sore groin, Smoltz gave up three-run homers to Jacque Jones and [...]

Braves 2, Cubs 1 (AP)
Lance Cormier never expected to strike out so many batters. Cormier pitched seven solid innings and struck out a career-high 10, and Brian McCann doubled in the go-ahead run in the sixth to help the Atlanta Braves beat Chicago 2-1 on Sunday, the Cubs’ ninth straight road loss. “It was weird. I’m definitely not a [...]

Braves 7, Cubs 3 (AP)
If the Braves could just keep playing Chicago, they’d have a much better chance of making it back to the playoffs. Adam LaRoche, Brian McCann and Andruw Jones homered for Atlanta to back the solid pitching of Chuck James, leading the Braves past the Cubs 7-3 Saturday night. “We’re making a good run for it,” [...]

Braves 8, Cubs 4 (AP)
The Atlanta Braves must put together a long winning streak if they want to have any hope of making the playoffs. They’re facing the right team to get something started. Brian McCann homered and drove in three runs, leading Atlanta past the hapless Chicago Cubs 8-4 Friday night and providing a glimmer of hope to [...]

Braves stagger home to make a last stand (AP)
The Braves long ago gave up on their streak of division titles, which could officially end this weekend. Well, the wild card is nearly out of reach, too. Atlanta staggered home from a road trip that included three doubleheaders in five days and just about finished off its chances of playing in October.

Mets 4, Braves 1, 1st game; Mets 8, Braves 0, 2nd game (AP)
The Mets and Braves played a doubleheader Wednesday that resembled the NL East race all season. It was no contest. Shawn Green busted out of his slump with a huge day at the plate, Oliver Perez pitched his second career shutout for his first win since May, and New York completed a doubleheader sweep with [...]

Martinez throws bullpen session; Braves prepare for third DH in five days (AP)
Pedro Martinez has one thing on his mind: pitching healthy in the playoffs. The New York Mets’ ace, sidelined since Aug. 15 with a strained right calf, threw about 65 pitches in a bullpen session Tuesday before his team’s scheduled game against the Atlanta Braves was rained out. “It went fine,” Martinez said.
