The Atlanta Braves are awaiting updates on injured stars Chipper Jones and John Smoltz before the team opens a weekend series against the Cubs in Chicago on Friday. Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz felt fine after playing catch Wednesday before his team’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers. The 40-year-old right-hander left Tuesday night’s game in the fourth inning after aggravating a pinkie injury while batting and then feeling a tweak in his pitching shoulder while warming up on the mound.

    Brewers 5, Braves 4 (AP)

After an awful first inning, Ben Sheets reassured manager Ned Yost everything was OK. After leaving the game early with a couple of aches, John Smoltz said he was fine, too. Sheets brushed off a poor first inning, Prince Fielder hit his NL-leading 17th homer and J.J. Hardy added the go-ahead RBI single to lead [...]

Bonds and Howard end home run droughts (AP)

Barry Bonds moved closer to Hank Aaron’s record, and then said he was done talking about it. Bonds broke out of a lengthy home run drought, hitting his 746th career homer in the sixth inning of a 6-4, 10-inning loss against Colorado to pull within nine of Hammerin’ Hank’s career mark of 755. Unfortunately [...]

    Phillies 13, Braves 6 (AP)

Ryan Howard is back and the Philadelphia Phillies are moving up. Howard was 3-for-4 with a pair of two-run homers, Greg Dobbs added another two-run shot and the Phillies crushed the Atlanta Braves 13-6 on Sunday to complete their first sweep of the season. Howard and Dobbs hit two-run homers in the first before the [...]

Cox draws 130th career ejection (AP)

Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox is one ejection shy of matching the career record after he was tossed from Saturday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Cox was ejected for the second straight game and the fifth time this season, leaving him one behind John McGraw’s record of 131. After Kelly Johnson led off the third [...]
