The Braves hope that avoiding arbitration with first baseman Mark Teixeira will prove a positive step both short-term and long-term.
Rather than fight with Teixeira and agent Scott Boras in a hearing, the sides agreed to a one-year, $12.5 million deal. The team believes the cost in irritation and potential hard feelings would not have been worth any potential savings.
General manager Frank Wren is a non-confrontational guy, and he also would like to sign Teixeira to a contract extension rather than let him go to free agency at the end of the season.
What Wren can offer is the camaraderie of the Braves clubhouse and the competition on the field.
