Kuroda, Jurrjens impressive in debuts with new teams (AP)
Hiroki Kuroda made his Los Angeles Dodgers debut, minus the Elvis Presley costume. Jair Jurrjens took the mound for the Atlanta Braves, hoping to show his favorite team that he’s worth star shortstop Edgar Renteria. Kuroda, another Japanese star jumping over to the big leagues, pitched two scoreless innings for the Dodgers in a 10-3 [...]

Boston Massacre: Beckett, Red Sox blitz BC in spring training opener (AP)
Josh Beckett and the World Series champions against a college team that’s been practicing indoors all winter to escape the snow. Cold start to spring break. With a merciless Beckett throwing hard from the mound, the Red Sox were in October form during their exhibition opener Thursday as they routed Boston College 24-0 in [...]

Dodgers rally to give Joe Torre a win in debut as their manager (AP)
Joe Torre might have looked out of place wearing Los Angeles Dodgers blue. He was right at home as a winner. Even with several blown opportunities and some shoddy baserunning, the Dodgers made Torre’s debut as their manager a success Thursday by scoring three runs in the ninth to beat the Atlanta Braves 5-4.

Dodger blue: Andruw Jones faces former team in spring debut with Los Angeles (AP)
Andruw Jones just didn’t look right in that Dodgers uniform, at least in the eyes of his former manager. “He looked better in a Braves uniform,” Bobby Cox said. After a decade as Atlanta’s center fielder, a position he handles about as well as anyone who’s played the game, Jones traded in one shade of [...]

Still unbeaten: Braves win again against a college team from back home (AP)
The Atlanta Braves remained unbeaten against college teams from back home, as Chipper Jones hit a two-run double and five minor leaguers combined on a seven-hitter Wednesday in an 8-0 win over Georgia. The Braves improved to 22-0 in their traditional spring opener against either Georgia or Georgia Tech, who rotate the game each year.

Baseball coaches don helmets on the field, but they’re not all happy about it (AP)
Glenn Hubbard trotted on the field Wednesday wearing a helmet — and feeling downright ridiculous. “You know what it feels like?” he asked before a spring training game. “Look at that kid over there.” Hubbard pointed toward a young batboy standing at the edge of the Atlanta Braves dugout, his head dutifully covered by a [...]

Glavine never gave up on finishing his career with Braves (AP)
When John Smoltz spotted the dirty uniform creeping into the space in front of his locker, he playfully pushed it back toward Tom Glavine’s side. “I’m sorry,” Glavine said, sounding downright sincere. Then, on his way to the showers, Glavine ran into Jeff Francoeur, who didn’t bother to look up. “You’re not even going to [...]

After 26 years as GM, Schuerholz eases into new role as Braves president (AP)
John Schuerholz is wandering toward the Atlanta Braves dugout when a fan shouts out a request. “Mr. Schuerholz, do you mind if I have your autograph?” he inquires. Schuerholz looks toward the man, a bit startled, then gathers himself for one of those self-deprecating zingers that slip out from time to time, even though it’s [...]

Teixeira focusing on performance, not contract (AP)
No offense to Alex Rodriguez, but Mark Teixeira won’t be negotiating any contracts on his own. He’ll let Scott Boras crunch the numbers. “That’s why I hired an agent,” the Atlanta Braves first baseman said Thursday. “My business is baseball. His business is doing the contracts. I stay out of his business.

It’s the early show for Ramirez — Manny arrives on time for Red Sox (AP)
Manny Ramirez is in midseason form. The big bopper with his own style — on and off the field — showed up at camp Thursday, marking the first time in three seasons he’s beat Boston’s deadline for reporting to spring training. Right on cue, he came out with a curious comment. “I might be [...]
